Harry Kane has been linked with a sensational and controversial move to Arsenal, with reports suggesting that the Spurs legend has a release clause in his Bayern Munich contract.
The release clause in 31-year-old Bayern Munich striker Harry Kane’s contract will decrease from £67m to £54m over the next year. Should any club trigger Kane’s release clause, Tottenham Hotspur would have to decide whether to match the bid and hope he preferred a return to north London.
Kane has been sporadically linked with a move back to the Premier League over the past 18 months. According to a report from German outlet Sport BILDclaims he has ‘secured’ a transfer clause in his Bayern Munich contract, which expires in 2027.
Regarding the ‘secret agreement’ with this clause, which is only active in winter transfer windows, the report explains:
‘The striker would have had to pull the clause during the winter transfer window and would then have been allowed to move for an estimated sum of 80 million euros (£66.5m).
‘However: The clause will be valid again next winter, then for a transfer for summer 2026. The transfer fee that FC Bayern would receive in this case should then only be an estimated 65 million euros (£54m). When the contract ends in the summer of 2027, the striker would then be free of charge.’
Kane’s Career After Spurs Exit
England captain Kane severed career-long ties with Tottenham when heading to Germany in the summer of 2023. He made that move as Spurs’ all-time leading scorer, with 280 goals to his name, and was waved off as a hero as Premier League giants begrudgingly accepted his bid to go chasing elusive silverware elsewhere.
Despite Bayern fending off competition from Premier League clubs to sign him for around £86 million, Kane is yet to get his hands on a major trophy at Bayern, but the expectation is that his duck will be broken in 2025. It has been suggested that the 31-year-old may be tempted to return to his homeland once a gold medal has been collected, with there more history for him to try and make there.
Merson Backs Kane for Arsenal Move
Arsenal legend Paul Merson has urged the Gunners to make a bold move for Kane, believing he could be the ideal solution to their No.9 problem.
Newcastle striker Alexander Isak has been linked with a move to the Emirates, but Merson thinks Arsenal could pull off an even bigger shock by signing Kane.
A Tottenham legend, it would be a sensation if he were to wind up at Arsenal, who are crying out for a prolific centre-forward, yet Merson does not see the issue with a move.
“Arsenal will buy him. Why not? Sol Campbell made the move,” Merson told Sky Sports.
“If he was available, you’ve got to weigh it up.”
Although Kane will be turning 33 by the time any prospective move takes place, Merson says his proven quality means that he will still be a bargain at €60m.
“For me it is. People go: ‘Oh he’s this age and this age,’ but Arsenal need now,” he explained. “After people said Salah, I said that I wouldn’t give him a three-year contract. I’d give him a one or two, but not a three. But that’s different because Liverpool probably go and win the league this year.
“If Arsenal haven’t won the league, they have to take a chance. They’ve got to buy someone that’s proven and done it.
“When you’re Harry Kane and you can go for €60m, there are only a couple of teams that can buy him. Man City aren’t going to buy him, what you hear about Man Utd, the Mathys Tel situation, that was worrying that they wouldn’t pay the loan. And that’s it, maybe Tottenham will buy him back. But he has to win something at Bayern to go back to Tottenham cause if he doesn’t win anything at Bayern, you’re not going to go back to Tottenham to win nothing.
“It would be a big move. If he comes back, does he think he can beat Alan Shearer’s record? I don’t really see the point in him coming back if he doesn’t think he can beat that.”
