The reason the 'January transfer window' is still ongoing in February

The winter transfer window has become slightly confusing in 2025 as it will remain open across the Premier League and EFL until February 3.

Historically, the winter window market is generally referred to as the ‘January window’ as it is usually slammed shut on January 31. However, that’s not the case this year, with teams in England being given a few extra days it will be ticking over into the second month of the new calendar year.

Why does the transfer window close in February?

The Premier League’s winter transfer window often ends on 31 Januarybut in 2025, the deadline has been pushed to Monday, February 3.

Why the change? Well, last year, the Premier League acknowledged that the deadline should be extended in order to bring the English game in line with some of the other elite European leagues.

In a statement released in May 2024, the Premier League said: “The winter window will open on Wednesday 1 January 2025 and will close at 23:00 GMT on Monday 3 February 2025. To ensure harmonisation with the major leagues in Europe, the closing dates were set following discussions with the EFL, DFL, Serie A, La Liga, and LFP, who will all close their Summer and Winter windows on 30 August and 3 February respectively.”

Do other European leagues have a later closing date?

Yes. The winter window in Serie A (Italy) and the Primeira Liga (Portugal) usually stays open until February 4, while in Turkey, it extends even further, closing on February 11.

This means clubs from these leagues will therefore be able to sign players from the Premier League, but the English teams would no longer be able to make any new signings after their own deadline.

Some leagues have windows that started later in January, and therefore have closing dates that extend into late February and even March.
