Mathys Tel has said a move to Tottenham was the ‘best option’ for him despite interest from rival Premier League clubs.
Tottenham Hotspur have added to their forward options by signing Bayern Munich’s Mathys Tel on loan for the rest of the season. The 19-year-old was linked with several Premier League clubs and initially turned down Spurs before making a U-turn on deadline day.
Tel’s loan deal will include a purchase option of £45.7m and a six-year contract.
Mathys Tel says joining Tottenham was the “best option” for him after making a loan move from Bayern Munich on transfer deadline day.
Why Mathys Tel chose to join Tottenham
The young forward was reportedly leaning towards a move to either Manchester United or Arsenal but ultimately decided on Tottenham after interest from those clubs cooled over the weekend.
In his first interview as a Spurs player, Tel explained why he made the switch.
“Why I chose Tottenham, because that was the best option for me, what was important for me,” Tel said.
“I felt the commitment, I spoke with the president [chairman Daniel Levy], talked with the manager. I’m young, I’ve started to grow up and this was the best option for me and I’m very happy.
“I’m very excited to play with my team-mates, for the fans. That’s a new challenge for me, a new chapter to open. Very excited about it.”
Tel joined Bayern from Rennes in 2022 and has scored 16 goals in 83 appearances. However, he has struggled for game time this season under Vincent Kompany, making only eight league appearances.
Now, he has a fresh challenge in north London and could make his debut as early as Thursday when Spurs visit Liverpool, aiming to protect their 1-0 first-leg lead in the Carabao Cup semi-finals.
