Sevilla vs Barcelona, La Liga: 10-Man Barça Close Gap in Title Race with Wild Away Win

Ten-man Barcelona tighten things up at the top of La Liga with a hard-fought 4-1 win away at Sevilla.

Barcelona faced Sevilla at the Ramón Sánchez-Pizjuán on Sunday night, looking to take advantage of the draw in the Madrid derby and close the gap at the top of the league table.

Hansi Flick’s side, sitting in third, are breathing down the necks of Real Madrid and Atlético Madrid, now just two points behind Carlo Ancelotti’s men.

Flick fielded a strong lineup, and Robert Lewandowski wasted no time putting Barça ahead early. However, before the celebrations began, Sevilla equalised within a minute of the opener.

At half-time, Flick substituted Gavi and introduced Fermin Lopez, and the youngster made an instant impact, heading the ball into the bottom corner at the back post to restore Barcelona’s lead. Shortly after, Djibril Sow appealed for a penalty after going down in the box but Barcelona broke quickly and Raphinha scored a brilliant goal from range, shimmying past a challenge and firing into the bottom corner.

Just as Barcelona looked in control, they were dealt a major blow when Fermín was sent off after a reckless challenge on Sow; he was initially shown a yellow card but VAR recommended that it be upgraded. Despite being down to 10 men, Barcelona defended resolutely and even added a fourth in the final minute. Substitute Eric García sealed the win with a back-post header, putting the cherry on top of the cake.

Flick’s men finished the night with a crucial 4-1 victory, closing the gap at the top to just two points. It was a chaotic, action-packed match filled with big chances, controversial calls, and stunning goals. Even with 10 men, Barcelona found a way to win and keep the title race wide open.

The final whistle came to end one of the craziest games of the La Liga season, one that Barça won with heart and some great attacking play. This could prove to be a pivotal three points for Flick’s side, who are now unbeaten in 11 consecutive matches across all competitions, winning nine. With the title race heating up, the Catalans remain red-hot in 2025.
