Saudi Pro League club Al-Nassr were keen on Darwin Núñez before finalizing their £64 million move for Aston Villa’s Jhon Durán, but Liverpool made it clear they had no intention of letting the 25-year-old leave.
Liverpool striker Núñez has been left frustrated after the Reds rejected an initial £70 million bid from Al-Nassr. The Saudi club eventually shifted their focus to Durán, sealing a £64 million ($80m) deal for the Colombian forward.
Nunez has been out of Liverpool’s starting line-up for much of the season, and would have liked the chance to speak to Al Nassr.
The Saudi Pro League side, who have Cristiano Ronaldo on their books on a staggering £168m-per-year contract, were very much interested in Núñez, but they couldn’t lure him away from Liverpool.
Liverpool spent £85m on the frontman to snap him up from Benfica in 2022 and his future at Anfield is likely to be addressed at the end of the campaign.
So far this season, the Uruguay international Nunez has scored six goals and registered four assists in his 29 appearances across all competitions this year. His performances have been inconsistent, but he has still delivered key moments, including a dramatic late brace that secured a stoppage-time 2-0 victory over Brentford two weeks ago.
