Mohamed Salah’s most likely destination if he leaves Liverpool has emerged. The forward’s current contract is set to expire at the end of the 2024/25 season—and it may not be the club you’d expect.
Mohamed Salah, 32, has been the subject of much media attention lately, with his current contract set to expire in June 2024 if no new agreement is reached. This means he is now eligible to negotiate a pre-contract agreement with foreign clubs, as the January transfer window is open.
Salah’s Impressive Form Amid Uncertainty
Despite the uncertainty surrounding his future, the Egyptian forward has been in impressive form this season, registering 23 goals and 17 assists in 32 appearances for Arne Slot’s side.
Al-Hilal Emerging as the Top Contender
Salah has long been a target for the Saudi Pro League (SPL), which owns Al-Hilal, Al-Ittihad, Al-Ahli and Al-Nassr. In the summer of 2023, Liverpool rejected a reported £150 million bid from Al-Ittihad for the Egyptian star.
Now, it has emerged that another club from the Gulf State could be Salah’s “most likely destination” if he chooses to leave Liverpool this summer.
Al-Hilal seemingly stepped up its plan to sign the Egyptian, particularly after Neymar’s departure, which has freed up both space in the squad and financial resources to make room for another overseas signing.
According to The Telegraph, Al-Hilal is the most likely destination for Salah should he fail to agree a new contract with Liverpool. As things stand, Salah would be able to leave Anfield as a free agent in the summer.
With Neymar’s exit creating both financial flexibility and an opening for another superstar signing, Al-Hilal is expected to make a major move for Salah. The report claims that the Riyadh-based club would look to sign Salah for free in the summer and that there is “no chance” a deal could be agreed before then.
The club currently sit top of the league after winning 14 of their 17 fixtures this season. Al-Hilal are current Saudi champions and Salah would link up with former Premier League players Aleksandar Mitrovic, Ruben Neves and Joao Cancelo if he were to make the move to the side.

Insights from Journalist Ben Jacobs

“Saudi Pro League set to take FIFA up on the exceptional window between 1-10 June in order to sign players ahead of the tournament.
“Mo Salah is still Hilal’s number one target as Jorge Jesus wants a right-sided attacker. However, Saudi dealmakers also respectful of Salah’s negotiations with Liverpool and his decision-making process.
“SPL sporting director Michael Emenalo has a strong relationship with Salah and the financials on offer already outlined from the approach on behalf of Al-Ittihad in 2023.
“If given any encouragement to bid, Saudi will make Salah a new offer that will see him become the best-paid player in the league. SPL executives feel Salah arriving will boost the TV revenue when the next cycle is sold this summer. And there is an idea to sell Egypt-specifc rights rather than a MENA wide package.”
Salah is widely regarded as one of the greatest Liverpool players of all time and a Premier League legend. The forward has scored 234 goals and given 105 assists in 381 matches for the Reds and has also won the Premier League and the Champions League with the club.
