‘I have no idea’ - Van Dijk opens up on future at Liverpool

Virgil van Dijk insists he still has ‘no idea’ whether he’ll be at Liverpool or not next season with Reds captain’s contract expiring this summer.

Liverpool’s dependable defender Virgil van Dijk has spoken about his contract situation, with his current deal set to expire soon.

During Thursday night’s Carabao Cup semi-final second leg against Tottenham, Van Dijk once again proved his value to Liverpool by scoring the team’s final goal, sealing a 4-1 aggregate victory.

The 33-year-old Dutchman is one of three Liverpool players whose contracts expire this summer, making him free to sign a pre-contract deal with any club.

Van Dijk’s leadership in defence was key to Liverpool’s smooth progression to Wembley, where they will face Newcastle United in what promises to be an exciting title decider. However, he remained tight-lipped about his future at Anfield.

What Did Van Dijk Say About His Future?

Speaking after helping the Reds seal a clash with Newcastle in the Carabao Cup final, Van Dijk addressed the uncertainty.  In an interview with Sky Sports, he asserted that he feels great, but when it comes to what the future holds, he has no certainty.

“I am feeling good, what the future brings I have no idea. Anyone who says they know, they are absolutely wrong,” Van Dijk said to SkySports.

Van Dijk has returned to his best form this season under the management of Arne Slot, whose side are top of the Premier League, finished at the summit of the Champions League table, have reached one domestic final and travel to Plymouth in the fourth round of the FA Cup on Sunday .

Last month, the veteran defender claimed that he has ‘three or four years’ left at the highest level as he dropped a major hint over his contract situation.

Speaking to Amazon Prime, he said: ‘I love the club, the club loves me. I love the fans, the fans love me and it is a very good foundation to be successful.

‘In my opinion I can play for another three, four years at least at the highest level. We will see what the future brings.’

Arne Slot’s Stance On Van Dijk’s Future At Liverpool

Liverpool head coach Arne Slot was full of praise for his captain after his crucial goal against Tottenham. When asked about Van Dijk’s importance to the team and his future, Slot responded:

“He’s been outstanding for this club for so many years and, since I’ve been here, he’s been outstanding for me as well. Good health is the first thing I wish him, and I hope to continue working with him for a long time, although I don’t think that will surprise you.”
