Paulo Dybala netted his first goal of 2025 to help a much-changed Roma team to a 1-0 win at relegation-threatened Venezia in Serie A.
Roma secured a 1-0 victory away against Venezia thanks to a second-half penalty from Paulo Dybala, enough to extend Claudio Ranieri’s unbeaten league run and earn their fifth win in eight Serie A matches.
Both teams entered this match on opposite trajectories – 19th-placed Venezia had gone six games without a win, while Roma sought to extend their seven-game unbeaten streak in their bid for a top-six finish.
Roma piled on the pressure early, coming painfully close to breaking the deadlock around the half-hour mark.
Venezia’s luck ran out 10 minutes into the second half, when Alessandro Marcandalli brought Angelino down in the area. Paulo Dybala made no mistake from the spot, sending his strike into the right corner to put Claudio Ranieri’s men in the driving seat.
Roma remained ninth in Serie A. City rival Lazio can move back fourth with a win over bottom club Monza later. Venezia was second from last, three points above Monza and five below safety.
With just one clean sheet at the Stadio Pier Luigi Penzo, Venezia now faces an uphill battle to avoid relegation. Eusebio Di Francesco’s side hasn’t won since beating Cagliari 2-1, now extending their winless streak to seven games.
Dybala Reacts to the Victory
Roma attacker Paulo Dybala spoke to DAZN after the match, reflecting on Roma’s 1-0 win:
“It was essential to win in a difficult stadium and at a complicated time. Venezia is strong at home. There was too much wind, this match had become complicated but we were intelligent.”
“Ndicka? We speak so many times of those who score goals and the work of the defenders is not valued. They are great players.”
“I don’t know if I was the best on the pitch, but to win you have to score goals… I played better games and I wasn’t rewarded. Now I’m happy, I’m finding consistency and I always like to play. The coach decides the formation, but now I’m happy.”
