Barcelona’s optimism regarding Dani Olmo’s registration continues to face obstacles. La Liga president Javier Tebas recently provided an update that further complicates the situation, hinting that the Catalan club’s battle is far from over. While the Spanish midfielder remains provisionally registered, the road ahead remains uncertain as legal proceedings progress.

What Happened?

Dani Olmo, signed from RB Leipzig for €55 million last summer, has endured a turbulent season at Barcelona. Barcelona’s registration of Dani Olmo and Pau Víctor has been at the center of controversy. Due to salary cap restrictions, Olmo was initially registered with the Catalan club only until the end of December.

Out of the 2,880 minutes Barcelona has played this season, Olmo has only managed 962 minutes—a mere 33.4% of the total playing time. Injuries, technical decisions, and registration issues have all contributed to his limited appearances. However, despite these setbacks, his early performances offered glimpses of brilliance. His three stunning goals in the opening matches, especially against Girona, showed his potential to integrate seamlessly into the Catalans’ dynamic lineup alongside players like Raphinha, Pedri, and Lamine Yamal.

The uncertainty surrounding his registration created a risk that Olmo a target for several Premier League sides could leave as a free agent if the issue was not resolved.

In response to La Liga’s initial decision to block Olmo’s registration, Barcelona sought legal recourse to challenge it. Earlier this month, the Higher Sports Council (CSD) granted Barcelona temporary approval for the registration of Olmo, along with fellow player Pau Victor. This ruling overturned an earlier decision by the RFEF-La Liga Coordination Committee, which had previously canceled their licenses. While this provided a temporary solution, the case remains under review. The CSD has up to three months to deliver a final verdict on the matter.

What Tebas Said

Despite the temporary ruling in Barcelona’s favor, Javier Tebas has strongly opposed the decision stating that La Liga has filed appeals in ordinary court to revoke the provisional registration. Speaking with Marca, La Liga president Tebas reaffirmed: “We are against his registration and we are putting the resources that correspond to us in the corresponding organisations. And where we ask that he not be registered, logically. Well, if we believe that he should not be registered, we obviously believe that we have a chance that he will not be registered.”

What Lies Ahead for Barcelona and Dani Olmo?

While the CSD has three months to issue a final ruling, Olmo and Pau Víctor remain eligible to play. However, the controversy surrounding their registration has made several La Liga clubs file complaints, arguing that the registrations were granted improperly.
