Chelsea midfielder Carney Chukwuemeka is expected to join German club Borussia Dortmund on loan for the remainder of the season.
According to a fresh report, Chelsea have finalised a loan agreement for Carney Chukwuemeka to move to Borussia Dortmund for the remainder of the 2024/25 campaign.
The 21-year-old midfielder is expected to arrive in Dortmund on Monday for a medical before completing the move.
Sky reports that Dortmund will cover Chukwuemeka’s full wages and pay a loan fee during his stay. The deal also includes a buy option, which is set higher than his £40m release clause.
Chelsea had initially wanted him to join Strasbourg on loan to continue his development with Liam Rosenior. However, the former Aston Villa midfielder wanted to play in a stronger league.
Chukwuemeka’s Chelsea Struggles
The West London club won the race to sign Chukwuemeka from Aston Villa in the summer of 2022 for a £20million ($25m) fee. Since then, he has featured 32 times for the Blues, racking up two goals and an assist. However, fitness issues stunted the youngster’s progress in his debut season at the West London club.
Things have gone from bad to worse under new boss Enzo Maresca. Chukwuemeka has barely featured this season, with the midfielder making five appearances in total this term with four coming as a substitute and all in cup competitions. His only start was in the Conference League dead rubber with Astana in Kazakhstan.
Bundesliga Move Beckons
Borussia Dortmund’s interest in Chukwuemeka makes sense. The Bundesliga giants had been searching for a midfielder ahead of the winter transfer window, and the forgotten Chelsea prospect emerged as a viable option, with the German club securing an agreement to sign him on loan until the end of the 2024/25 season.
The German transfer window closes at 17:00 GMT on Monday, six hours before the English transfer window ends.
