FC Barcelona have defeated Deportivo Alaves 1-0 in their La Liga match.
FC Barcelona have defeated Deportivo Alaves in their La Liga matchthe gap to Real Madrid to four points in the La Liga points table.
Barcelona aimed to take advantage of Real Madrid’s loss at Espanyol to go within four points of their rivals, and they have done so, albeit without much conviction. After dropping points to lower-ranked teams like Getafe, Leganes, and Las Palmas in recent weeks, third-placed Barcelona are now just four points behind La Liga leaders Real Madrid.
Lamine Yamal Shines Again
The title race remains alive for Barca, thanks to the incredible efforts of Lamine Yamal and Pedri on Sunday. Yamal, who was named Man of the Match, put in a remarkable performance. The 17-year-old attempted 21 dribbles against Alaves (11 completed), the most of any Barcelona player in a single LaLiga game since at least 2005-06 (20 by Lionel Messi vs Mallorca in April 2007)
Barcelona didn’t play their best against Alaves, but they did enough to secure a 1-0 victory at the Estadi Olímpic Lluís Companys. The match remained goalless until the 61st minute when striker Robert Lewandowski found the net and put them up by one goal. This was the only goal scored during the match as FC Barcelona managed to get the three points from the game and cut the gap to Real Madrid down to four points.
The result means that Barcelona have closed to within four points of Real Madrid, and three of Atletico Madrid – and both those clubs face each other in the Madrid derby next weekend. Flick’s side will hope that they can take another step forward in the title race when they take on Sevilla at the Ramon Sanchez-Pizjuan. The defeat for Alaves means that they stay in the relegation zone.
Flick Urges Barcelona to Keep Winning
Despite the win, Hansi Flick urged his team to keep pushing if they want to maintain pressure on Real Madrid.
“Today we gave a really good answer because it was a tough match and Alaves, they defend really good,” Flick told reporters.
“I think for us it’s a good situation, better than before. It was necessary to win today, and the team did good because the pressure was on them.
“Atletico and Real, they are fantastic teams… we have to do our job. We are some points behind, so we have to win. We have to make pressure on them.”
