Negotiations between Marcus Rashford and Aston Villa are now in the final stages, with the England forward set to join the Premier League club on loan until June.
Marcus Rashford’s Manchester United career could come to a close with his purported loan switch to Aston Villa reportedly may include a clause to make the move permanent.
On Friday, reports emerged that Villa have been keen to add at least one attacking player before the window closes after after selling Jhon Duran to Al Nassr for £64.5 million.
Meanwhile, string of potential moves for Rashford had fallen through, but Aston Villa have emerged as a likely destination for the attacker, who has scored seven goals in 24 appearances this season. The forward is expected to join Unai Emery’s side before Monday’s deadline, with all parties still in talks to iron out further details. Villa have agreed to cover a substantial part of Rashford’s wage, and other performance-related bonuses have been built into the deal. Talks are ongoing to finalize the remaining details.
Unai Emery Personally Requested Rashford’s Signing
According to The Athletic, Villa boss Unai Emery personally requested the club enter talks over Rashford. The Spaniard is understood to be a ‘big fan’ of the United outcast and believes he can help him regain his best form.
Rashford is eager to get his career back on track after a difficult few years under both Erik ten Hag and now Amorim. He is said to be attracted by the prospect of Champions League football, and working under a manager who believes in him is also a huge motivation.
Rashford’s Legacy at Manchester United
The 27-year-old has shown his world-class quality in the Premier League over the years, and despite his recent slump, he remains a top-quality player on his day. Having joined United’s academy at the age of seven, he made his first-team debut at 18, famously scoring a brace against Midtjylland before scoring twice more against Arsenal three days later. Rashford has made 426 appearances for the Red Devils, scoring 138 goals.
Tension with Ruben Amorim Leading to Exit
However, his relationship with new United boss Ruben Amorim has reportedly turned sour and the new United hierarchy’s eagerness to cut costs are both set to see Rashford depart. The forward has been exiled by United manager Ruben Amorim this season, not featuring in any of the last 12 games. Amorim has cited a poor work ethic during training as the reason for the player’s absence.
The Portuguese coach even went as far as suggesting that he would rather select his 63-year-old goalkeeping coach, Jorge Vital, on the substitutes’ bench over Rashford. The United star has also admitted that he is “ready for a new challenge”.
