Ronaldo revealed that his son, Mateo, believes that one player from the younger generation has surpassed him.
Cristiano Ronaldo turns 40 next week, but his age hasn’t dulled his famous competitive spirit. For over 20 years, he has dominated in world football, breaking many records and staying at the top longer than any other player before him. This sustained excellence has earned him the GOAT label from fans and analysts alike, fueling a legendary rivalry with Lionel Messi.
But despite his legendary status, CR7 recently revealed that his own son favors another player over him.
Ronaldo’s Son Picks Mbappé Over His Own Father
Speaking in a teaser for an upcoming interview with journalist Edu Aguirre on La Sexta TV, set to air in full next week, Ronaldo revealed that his son, Mateo, has his own pick for the best player in the world—and it’s not his dad.
“My son Mateo is a huge fan of Kylian Mbappe,” Ronaldo said, acknowledging that his son idolizes the French forward, who now plays for Real Madrid.
But the admiration doesn’t stop there—Mateo even enjoys teasing his father about it. “He pokes me sometimes,”Cristiano chuckled, before quoting his son’s playful jab: “Dad, Mbappe is better than you.”
In typical Ronaldo classic fashion, the Portuguese icon shared how he responds to the banter:
“I tell him, ‘No, dad is better than Mbappe. I have more goals than him,’” he said, eliciting laughter from the interviewer and offering a rare glimpse into his lighthearted family dynamic.
Ronaldo’s Legacy vs. Mbappé’s Rise
Despite the playful jabs at home, Ronaldo’s career speaks for itself. With an incredible 920 career goals to his name, the Portuguese legend remains one of football’s greatest goal scorers football has ever seen. His consistency and longevity have seen him break records across multiple leagues, including the Premier League, La Liga, Serie A and even Saudi Pro League.
Even at 40, he isn’t slowing down. Ronaldo has alreayd scored 20 goals in 23 appearances for Al Nassr this season and still remains a regular starter for the Portuguese national team.
Meanwhile, Kylian Mbappé, widely regarded as one of the football superstar of the next generation, has been dominating European football first with Paris Saint-Germain and now with Real Madrid. The Frenchman made no secret of his admiration for Ronaldo growing up. This is one of the main reasons why he coveted a move to Real Madrid in his career.
After a slow start, the 25-year-old has started 2025 in style, scoring in every Real Madrid’s matches so far. In fact, his 22 goals so far this season show he is on track to surpass Cristiano Ronaldo’s first season tally at Santiago Bernabeu.
